“One position and one person in town government can’t solve all these issues, but it’s a start in the right direction,” McCarthy said Tuesday.
McCarthy, who grew up on the island, was chosen out of a group of 51 applicants for the job. He was not the town’s first choice.
In November town officials chose Karolina Oliveira for the spot. Oliveira had served as a DEI directorfor the past 20 years, most recently at Life University in Marietta, Ga. Oliveira, however, turned down the position a week after she was hired, due to housing issues. Her withdrawal sent the town back to the drawing board. Last month, Mc-Carthy was re-interviewed and chosen from a group of four other finalists. He starts Monday, March 1.
