HENDERSON – The Collegiate 100 program (C100) at Nevada State College, the second only program of its kind west of the Mississippi, was awarded $22,000 by the Las Vegas Chapter of 100 Black Men, a nonprofit organization that strives to improve the quality of life and enhance educational opportunities for African Americans.

“The implementation of C100 and the contribution made by 100 Black Men are significant as the community has partnered with Nevada State College to help support the road to success for several African American students,” said Charles Buckner, associate director of recruitment at Nevada State College.

C100, which is only offered at Nevada State College and the University of California, Berkeley in the western part of the nation, is a leadership and service program with awards to develop leaders. The program also provides members opportunities for internships with major sponsor companies, participation in the national network of C100 peers and leaders along with workshops and career seminars designed to elevate C100 success.

“Members of C100 will assist the local 100 Black Men Chapter with its programmatic initiatives that support the development of social, emotional, educational, and physical needs of youth who have few or no positive role models in the communities in which they live,” said Larry Mosley, immediate past president and founder of 100 Black Men Las Vegas.

Nevada State College, which noted a 90 percent increase in African American freshman enrollment in the Fall 2020 semester, will award the funds to recipients selected by 100 Black Men and will further provide any matching amounts based on any standard matching programs administered by the College.

“We are extremely proud to continue our mission in supporting diverse and deserving populations throughout our community and on our campus,” said Bart Patterson, president of Nevada State College. “It is our intention to grow our partnerships with other organizations like 100 Black Men who have a focus on reshaping family trees and providing pathways to success for underrepresented communities.”

As one of Nevada’s most diverse college campuses, Nevada State offers students from all backgrounds, including non-traditional and high-achieving students, an opportunity to earn a degree through quality academic programs that ready them for in-demand careers.

“This significant contribution will undoubtedly be a defining moment in the lives of recipients,” Derric Carter, PhD., lecturer of interdisciplinary studies at Nevada State College and advisor for Collegiate 100.
