National leaders in politics, business and the arts will be honored by the The Shirley Chisholm Cultural Institute at its annual virtual SCCI Awards Ceremony on Friday, November 4th, 2022 at 7p, it was announced recently by Barbara Bullard, President, SCCI.

This year’s ceremony to hosted by radio personality Angela Yee, celebrates the 50th anniversary of Shirley Chisholm’s run for the office of President of the United States by honoring Americans whose life-long work and example aligns with the missions and commitment of the late Congresswoman’s. “This virtual award will also be a call to action on the importance of voting, an issue Shirley Chisholm said Ms. Bullard. “We are celebrating leaders who fit the categories of Truth to Power, Unbought Unbossed, and Catalyst for Change Awards. Ms. Chisholm was the first African American to run for the Presidential office President of the United States of America, we give tribute to the icon Shirley Chisholm during the 50th Anniversary of her run, during her birthday month.

The honorees are: Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Humanitarian Nadine Hack, and Reverend Al Sharpton with greetings from dignitaries such as Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, Journalist and Author April Ryan, Commissioner of NYC Dept of Cultural Affairs, NYC political leader Laurie Cumbo and David Johns, Executive Director of the National Black Justice Coalition and Patricia Russo, Executive Director of The Campaign School at Yale University.

Radio personality Angele Lee will host this year’s event. Jessica Care Moore the renowned poet, author, activist, and recording artist, will be the awards presenter.

The: Reverend Dr. Al Sharpton
Rev. Dr. Al Sharpton is founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), a not-for-profit civil rights organization formed in 1991 with over 100 chapters nationwide, including a Washington, DC Bureau, and regional offices across the US. As one of the nation’s most-renowned civil rights leaders, Rev. Al Sharpton has been praised by President Barack Obama as “the voice of the voiceless and a champion for the downtrodden”.

Congresswoman Barbara Lee
Congresswoman Barbara Lee has resented California’s 13th District since 1998. She is the highest ranking African American woman in Democratic Leadership, serving as Co-Chair of the Policy and Steering Committee. She also serves on the Budget Committee and the powerful Appropriations Committee, which oversees all federal government spending. Congresswoman Lee began her career in politics as a volunteer on Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm’s 1972 presidential campaign after meeting her as a student at Mills College. Congresswoman Chisholm was a mentor to Congresswoman Lee throughout her career and encouraged her to run for office.

Humanitarian Nadine Hack
Named Top 100 Thought Leader Trustworthy Business Behaviour often enough to earn a Lifetime Achievement Trust Award, Ms. Hack consults, advises, and coaches senior business, nonprofit, and government executives to clarify goals, tackle obstacles and excel at leadership. As an ESG, CSR, and DEI advocate, she helps advance global citizenship, entrepreneurship and innovation. With a focus on responsible leadership, diversity, sustainability, human rights and other social issues for 21st century business, she was the first woman Executive-in-Residence at IMD Business School, where she maintains an active affiliation. She’s been a board director as chair, vice chair, and/or on the management committee for companies and nonprofits (e.g.: chair Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation).

It is the mission of The Shirley Chisholm Cultural Institute, founded by Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm in 1977 and her colleagues, to provide opportunities and cultural experiences for all ages to utilize economic, educational, health, and recreational resources in our communities. The newly created SCCI Board revitalized the SCCI institution that had gone to sleep due to the aging and passing of previous members. consists of thought leaders, entrepreneurs, and creatives from an array of fields who understand the relevance of her legacy. SCCI’s goal is to preserve Congresswoman Chisholm’s legacy through the initiatives cultivated in 1977 with 21st-century activism and innovation. State-of-the-art programming is being developed in diverse media platforms.
Funds raised will go to support the initiatives of the Shirley Chisholm Cultural Institute.
