The African American Museum in Philadelphia is moving to be part of museum row on the Ben Franklin Parkway, officials announced yesterday.

  • Its home will be the former Family Court building at 1801 Vine St., a historic, columned, 240,000-sq.-ft. behemoth that’s sat vacant for years despite its prominent location right next to the Free Library’s main branch.

The library will also open a new kids center in part of the building. Four development teams are being considered, with a 5-year timeline for completion.

Philly students are returning to learning in just a few weeks, and it’s time for families to stock up for going back to school.

  • Free backpacks are available at several events, and there are also a lot of orgs collecting bags and other necessities to donate to kids who need them.

From district-sponsored events to neighborhood nonprofit drives, Asha Prihar rounds up options for picking up or donating bookbags and supplies.

Laura Wagoner, Finance Director for the Republican Part of Pennsylvania, prepares to deliver donated backpacks to the Wissahickon Charter School near Tioga-Nicetown.
