(Robinson)’s project, titled “Blixel: (Re)stock Image Collection,” is designed to boost the representation of people of African descent in stock images — generic photographs of people pursuing everyday activities that are used in marketing, advertising and other media. Its ambitious and uniquely community-driven nature — drafting volunteer models to pose for the images — earned mention in The New York Times, grabbed art-world bloggers’ attention, made front-page headlines locally and was reported on TV.
