Join us for a special talk on African American Designers with Fashion Historian, Archivist and Professor Tonya Blazio-Licorish.

Elizabeth Keckley and Anne Lowe are credited as some of the earliest Black Americans to garner the title “Designer,” but did you know a New Yorker named Zelda Wynn Valdes created the original Playboy bunny uniform and designer Patrick Kelly was the first Black American to be invited into the Chambre de Syndicale du pret-a-porter des couturiers, the prestiges governing body of French ready to wear industry. Today many or not familiar with these are other names like Jon Haggins, Willi Smith or Kevan Hall, designers that burst onto the fashion scene during the 1970 to 1990s. They and many others help to shape the fashion industry in the decades of the 20th century and beyond.

Please join us for a conversation on the legacy of Black Designers in the Fashion Industries.

Tonya Blazio-Licorish is an Adjunct Lecturer for CCPS at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Tonya has taught with FIT since 2016 and is a visual culture archivist and trend specialist. She received her BFA from FIT and her MA from NYU Steinhardt.

Registration is required to receive the Zoom link at https://www.harrisonpl.org/events/harrison/16812.
