Professional athletes born, raised, educated and employed in the Bay Area have been key figures in the ongoing fight for racial equality in the United States. The region has been a bastion of diversity and multiculturalism, of course, but the country’s legacy of systemic racism means the pursuit of racial justice must occur within, as well as beyond, its scenic borders.
In honor of Black History Month 2021, we compiled an extensive — but by no means all-encompassing — list of the most vital moments in the Bay Area’s rich sports history in advancing the twin causes of racial equality and justice. Between all the barriers broken and brave stances taken, there was no shortage of options.
Here, then, are but some of those moments, each of which centers on a player or team with strong connections to the Bay Area.
