Nationwide — Several college students from Alabama and other states who are infected with the coronavirus have been reportedly attending parties to intentionally spread the virus and see who would catch the virus first.

The disturbing report came out as a rumor first until authorities investigated unnamed students, who were aware that they were COVID-19 positive. Tuscaloosa Fire Chief Randy Smith confirmed that they had been organizing “COVID parties” to purposely infect others.

“They put money in a pot and they try to get COVID. Whoever gets COVID first gets the pot. It makes no sense,” Tuscaloosa City Councilor Sonya McKinstry said, according to ABC News. “They’re intentionally doing it.”

In line with that, the Tuscaloosa City Council released an ordinance requiring all citizens to wear a face mask in public.

Moreover, authorities are asking for the public to report anyone who violates the state’s “Safer at Home Order” that requires people who test positive to “be quarantined to their place of residence for a period of 14 days.”

Arrol Sheehan, a spokesperson for the Alabama Department of Public Health, said that those who were known to violate the order can be fined for up to $500.
