NCCC Establishes a Pre-Nursing Scholarship in honor of retired professor Alison Jassen
PRESS RELEASE WINSTED — Northwestern Connecticut Community College is pleased to announce the creation of a Pre-Nursing Scholarship in honor of recently retired Professor Alison Jassen. Professor Jassen taught Biology and Chemistry at the college for thirty years and is an NCCC alumna. She is passionate about the community’s need for well-educated nurses and other health care professionals and although she is retired, she continues to teach Anatomy and Physiology part-time at the college.

of virtual program
PRESS RELEASE TORRINGTON – The Torrington Historical Society is excited to offer the second presentation in a series of virtual programs, sponsored by Connecticut Humanities. The program will be presented via Zoom. The program is free but donations are accepted.
“We Must Help That Change to Come” will be presented by Prof. Hamish Lutris on
Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 6:30 p.m. This illustrated PowerPoint program will discuss
the role of African Americans in 1920s and 30s American culture. In the 1920s and during the depression, African-Americans found a significant and inspiring role in American entertainment and sports. Prof. Lutris will discuss how the heightened emphasis on the race of these athletes and artists made them more than simply famous in their respective fields – it brought hard-won respect to all African-Americans. This talk will center on a few events of the
period, such as the Harlem Renaissance or the 1936 Olympics to highlight the emergence of a powerful African-American culture during this time. Hamish Lutris is an Associate Professor of History, Political Science, and Geography at Capital Community College in Hartford, Connecticut. He has worked in some of America’s premier natural and historical sites, leading hiking and historical programs. He has also lectured extensively in the United States, Europe, and Canada, presenting programs on wide-ranging historical topics, including Native American history, the Civil War, Scientific History,
Social and cultural history, World War I, World War II, and the American West.

Political Science Author and Educator Susan Herbst to Speak at NCCC
PRESS RELEASE WINSTED — NCCC will host a virtual talk by Dr. Susan Herbst, former University of Connecticut president, award winning author, and political educator on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. The title of her talk is Presidential Elections 2020 – A View from Political Science. The event is free and open to the public.
Herbst served as the president of UConn from 2010 to 2019. Prior to her presidency, she served in several top administrative capacities across the country including Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer of the University System of Georgia, Provost and Executive Vice President at The University at Albany (SUNY), and the Dean of College of Liberal Arts at Temple University in Pennsylvania.
Born in New York City and raised in Peekskill, N.Y., Herbst received her B.A. in Political Science from Duke University in 1984 and her Ph.D. in Communication Theory and Research from the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication in 1989. Herbst joined Northwestern University in Illinois as an assistant professor in 1989 and remained there until 2003, serving in many capacities including Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Department.
Dr. Herbst is a scholar of public opinion, media, and American politics, and is the author of four books and many articles. Her book Rude Democracy: Civility and Incivility in American Politics was awarded the Doris Graber Award from the American Political Science Association. Herbst currently teaches in the political science department at UCONN, Stamford, and co-edits the University of Chicago Press series in American Politics.
The appearance by Dr. Herbst is part of NCCC’s student Welcome Week, hosted by the Student Activities Department. NCCC Hosts Ken E. Nwadike, Jr. the founder of The Free Hugs Project
PRESS RELEASE WINSTED — Northwestern Connecticut Community College will host a virtual appearance by documentary filmmaker, motivational speaker, and peace activist Ken E. Nwadike, Jr. on Wednesday, September 23, 2020, 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Known as The Free Hugs Guy, Nwadike launched The Free Hugs Project in 2014 to spread love and compassion in response to the Boston Marathon bombings. The project gained popularity in 2016 when Nwadike made news headlines for his peace-keeping efforts during protests, riots, and political rallies. He has made appearances on CNN, USA Today, Good Morning Britain, and BBC News. His videos have been viewed online more than 150 million times. Nwadike is also the President and CEO of Superhero Events, LLC, which produces the annual Hollywood Half Marathon that raises funds for homeless youth shelters.
Nwadike’s interactive program will engage attendees in conversations about the need for understanding and compassion amid our current racially and politically charged atmosphere. As a motivational speaker, Nwadike talks about his own former homelessness and how he overcame his insecurities by getting involved in activities at school and receiving support from coaches, teammates, and friends – all which paved the way for him to start a number of businesses and a charitable organization to help homeless teens.
