The Carroll Cabin is a late 18th/early 19th-century hand-hewn log home located on the Forbes State Forest in Fayette County. Thesis research on this historic resource revealed that it is among the oldest extant homes in Southwestern Pennsylvania and an important connection between the past and present. — Oct. 28, 7 p.m., Expanding the Narrative by Linking the Past to the Present at Pandenarium, Angie Jaillet-Wentling, PennDOT, Sami Taylor, New South Associates, Inc. Since 2010, archaeological investigations at the site of Pandenarium, 36ME253, have focused on expanding the narrative and what we know about the free African Americans who established a community at a dusty country crossroads in Mercer County, Pennsylvania in 1854. Back Mountain
Northmoreland Twp. Volunteer Fire Company will hold Monday Night Bingo on Monday, Oct. 19, at the fire hall, 1618 Demunds Road, Centermoreland. Hall is limited to 25 percent capacity. Masks are required. Early bird specials start at 6:30 p.m. Regular games are at 7. Doors to the hall open and kitchen begins serving at 5 p.m.
A drive-through only roast beef dinner will be held at the Northmoreland Twp. Volunteer Fire Co., 1618 Demunds Road, Centermoreland, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23. Cost is $10.
Center Moreland United Methodist Church will host a socially distant, minimal contact Trunk or Treat from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25. Trunks will be set up six feet apart with a non-contact activity. The goodies will be prepackaged and handed out at the end. There will also be a take home picnic dinner provided.
A drive thru take-out beef dinner will be held by the Sweet Valley Volunteer Fire Company, 5383 Main Road, Sweet Valley, from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. Take-out price has been lowered to $10 per dinner since no dessert or drink will be included. Patrons are asked to remain in their cars. Dinners will be brought out to the vehicles. The Duryea Borough building and street department will be closed Monday, Oct. 12, in observance of Columbus Day. Garbage collection will be Tuesday and Wednesday. Recycling will be collected Thursday and Friday. There will be no yard waste collection this week.
West Side
Swoyersville Little League will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the Swoyersville American Legion. Nominations for officers for the upcoming year will take place, along with other business. Interested parents can nominate and/or accept nominations at this time. Official voting will take place at the board meeting scheduled in November on a date to be determined. Masks are required at the meeting.
Pilgrim Congregational Church, 172 Center Ave., Plymouth, will hold a take out only soup, sandwich and bake sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. Soups are chicken noodle, chicken pot pie, cream of chicken, chili, cream of cauliflower, harvest, cheesy potato, piggy, vegetable beef barley, vegetable with noodles, and halushki. Cost is $3.50 for a 16 oz. cup and $2 for an 8 oz. cup. Sandwiches with a bag of chips are $2. Sandwich selections are egg salad, meat, hot dog and chili dog. Saints Peter & Paul Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, North Wilkes-Barre, is taking orders for pasties for pickup on Saturday, Oct. 17. Pasties are made with seasoned ground beef and potatoes wrapped in a pie crust pastry and are available with or without onions. Pasties are $7 each and gravy is available for $1 for an 8 oz. cup. On Oct. 15, the Wilkes-Barre City Health Department will conduct a free drive-thru flu clinic in the upper parking lot of St. Mary’s Church.
