The Democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden, believes that Trump « has shrouded the United States » in darkness and detailed some proposals to return the country « to the light. »
The United States is going through a « period of darkness » marked by four crises.
« Four historical crises. At the same time. The perfect storm ”, this is how the Democratic presidential candidate described the current moment Joe biden, one of the men with more experience in the American politics.
Biden formally accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination for the presidency on Thursday with his most crucial speech in his nearly 50 years of political life, in which he harshly criticized Donald Trump and made a firm call for a vote.
Trump, Biden said, « has shrouded America in darkness for too long. »
“If you entrust me with the presidency, I will lean on the best of us, not the worst. I will be an ally of the light, not of the dark. It is time for us (…) to unite and, make no mistake, united we can overcome and we will overcome this stage of darkness ”, he assured.
But how exactly do you plan to do it?
These are the four crises Biden mentioned and the proposals he mentioned to combat them.
1. « The worst pandemic in 100 years »
The coronavirus is a central part of the US presidential election campaign, given the severe blow that the country is suffering from the pandemic, with more than 170,000 Americans killed and some 5 million infected.
“We lead the number of confirmed cases in the world. We lead in death toll, ”Biden lamented. « The tragedy we are going through now did not have to be this serious. »
If he wins, the Democratic politician announced that he would implement the national strategy that he has been designing since March.
.The Democratic National Convention was held virtually because of the pandemic.
She implies the development and deployment of rapid coronavirus tests « with results available immediately », a detail that does not go unnoticed in the United States, where one of the great problems in the response to the pandemic has been with test errors and, recently, the delay to get results.
In addition, Biden promised that the country will produce the medical supplies and protective equipment that the country you need to not depend on others.
« We will do them here in the United States, so that we are never again at the mercy of China or other foreign countries to protect our people, » he stressed.
The dependence of China and other countries on medical or protection material against the pandemic has been one of the most controversial issues, not only in the United States, but in multiple countries around the world, which began to question the current supply chains.
. Medical personnel in the United States also suffered material shortages during the pandemic.
Biden also mentioned his plan to reopen schools, although he did not provide many details, beyond ensuring that it will be based on the opinion of experts in the country, in a clear reference to the line taken by Trump in the pandemic, at times faced directly with that of its own specialists.
The Democratic candidate also assured that he will approve a « national mandate » for everyone to wear a mask, « not as a burden, but as patriotic duty ”, stressed.
2. « The worst economic crisis since the Great Depression »
This year, more than 50 million people lost their jobs in the United States and, according to Biden, « about one in six small businesses closed down. »
It is the worst unemployment rate in the country since the Great Depression of the 1930s, a consequence of the hard blow of the pandemic, which causes many people to also lose their medical coverage, closely linked to employment in the country.
In that sense, Biden hinted at some of his plans to combat it, although did not provide many details.
EPA Obama, of whom Biden was vice president, also called for a vote for Biden and launched his harshest criticism of Trump.
The politician promised 5 million new jobs in technology and manufacturing industries « for the future to be made in the United States »; investment in modern infrastructure; reduction in the costs of health services or education (“where the cost does not prevent young people from going to university and student debt don’t crush them on leaving« ).
According to the candidate, all those investments can be paid for by “closing the gaps” and “Trump’s handout of US $ 1.3 trillion in taxes at 1%. [de la población] richest and the most profitable corporations, some of which don’t even pay taxes. «
“I am not looking to punish anyone, far from it, but the time has come for the wealthiest and the most big corporations pay their share« .
To this, Biden added other promises, again without much detail:
an immigration system that empowers the economy and reflects American values;
an educational system that « trains our people for the best jobs of the 21st century »;
strengthened union unions;
equal pay for women;
wage increases and improved conditions for essential workers during the pandemic;
social security protection and medicare health insurance: « You have my word, » he said.
3. « The strongest call for racial justice since the 1960s »
Without a doubt, this presidential campaign is also marked by the growing racial tensions in the United States and these were a central part of Biden’s speech.
Although he referred to the death of the African-American George Floyd At the hands of a white police officer, Biden highlighted another incident that is part of the racial crisis: Charlottesville, the violent white supremacist march that revived racist hatred in 2018 and that Trump did not condemn.
That was a « wake-up call » for Biden, said the candidate himself, and called for the unity of the United States. to end « hatred. »
TWITTER / RUTH RICHARDSON The death of George Floyd, 46, sparked an unprecedented wave of protests in the United States.
“The history of the United States tells us that it has been in our darkest moments that we have made our great strides. When we have found the light. In this dark moment, I think we are ready to move forward again, ”he said.
In times like today, he added, « the only way forward » is a « united » country.
In Biden’s view, the solution is also for the United States to redefine itself as the land of « possibilities. »
« In the United States, everyone, and I mean everyone, should have the opportunity to go as far as their dreams and the ability that God has given them takes them. »
4. « The growing threats of climate change »
The challenge of climate change was the fourth crisis that Biden highlighted, in a clear nod to the party’s most progressive and youngest wing, for whom it is a primary issue.
“One of the most powerful voices I am hearing in the country comes from young people. They are speaking out against the growing inequality and injustice in America. Economic injustice. Racial injustice. Environmental injustice« , he pointed.

Although he introduced some references in his speech related to caring for the environment and climate change, Biden at this point did not detail actions to take if he can get back to the White House.
However, he underlined the role that his running mate, the Democratic vice presidential candidate, will play. Kamala harris, against all the previous crises, given his extensive experience against « the big banks or the pro-gun lobby groups. »

President Trump, for his part, was tweeting during the Democratic event.
And it didn’t take long for him to respond to Biden’s speech.
« In 47 years Joe did not do anything that now speaks« Said Trump in reference to the political career of the Democratic candidate.
« It will never change, they are just words! »
In 47 years, Joe did none of the things of which he now speaks. He will never change, just words!
