Are you a local business owner or marketer in Laurel? Our premium local sponsorships will keep you at the top of inboxes around town every morning. Contact us here for the lowdown.

First, today’s weather:

Clear throughout the day. High: 76 Low: 55.

Here are the top four stories in Laurel today:

  1. The D.C. region was battered by the remnants of Hurricane Ida on Sept. 1. Tornadoes and flash flooding rushed into a region already waterlogged from recent storms. Two tornadoes struck Maryland, one in Anne Arundel County around 2:15 p.m., and another reported 3 miles west of Wicomico in Charles County. (WTOP)
  2. Governor Larry Hogan announced on Sept. 1 that he is directing the State Superintendent of Schools and the Interagency Commission on School Construction to conduct an immediate statewide assessment of ventilation and air filtration in Maryland public school buildings. (Maryland.gov)
  3. COMMENTARY: Over hundreds of years Black Americans were systematically beaten, raped, bought, sold, tortured and killed. The United States of America has not fully or even partially accounted for the extreme criminality that occurred here. Black Americans need justice and reparations in order to help bring an end to systemic racism. Justice needs to be served for centuries of crimes that were not prosecuted. (Baltimore Sun)
  4. Governor Larry Hogan‘s deadline for Maryland hospital and nursing home workers to get at least their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine passed Wednesday. According to a doctor at one hospital says that workers are close to meeting that goal. In June, Maryland hospitals had formed a consensus to require vaccines for their workers by November. (WYPR)
