So Jimmy Garoppolo’s ankle is fine. Or as fine as it is going to be. That’s critical — for Sunday night’s game against the Rams, for the rest of the season and perhaps for the viability of his career.
Garoppolo has to move. He must.
Last season, using his legs was a luxury he didn’t think he needed. Now, it’s almost mandatory for his very survival. The question, though, is whether that right ankle, which probably still isn’t 100 percent, creates even more hesitation (on top of the reticence the left ACL tear seemed to cause).
Not only does the league require mobility from quarterbacks, the 49ers’ situation could definitely use the aid of a quarterback who isn’t a sitting duck. Especially not with Aaron Donald in the middle.
