Community members flocked to Fountain Square last night in honor of the Downtown Evanston Holiday Light Celebration.
The night’s festivities included performances by the Evanston Children’s Choir, Northwestern a cappella group Purple Haze and circus artists from the Actor’s Gymnasium. Mayor Daniel Biss took the podium to speak about the importance of shopping local, and children posed for photos with Santa.
Emails obtained by the Evanston RoundTable show why female lifeguards grew so frustrated with the city’s response to their allegations of sexual harassment and abuse. In one email, a city official told complaining lifeguards that action on their demands would have to wait because “the priority right now is getting the City’s budget passed for 2021.”
And a key city official wrote to another in the summer of 2020 that it was “doubtful that anyone at the City will agree to apologize and admit that it knew this stuff was going on.”
It’s taken decades for Evanston to commit to paying reparations to Black residents over historic racial discrimination, and it might take a few more months for housing grant recipients to get their funds.
Initially, the committee had a Nov. 11 deadline to approve applications and a Nov. 30 deadline to select the first 16 grant recipients. Neither of these deadlines were met. The deadline to approve all outstanding applications is now Dec. 15. No new deadline has been set for when grant recipients will be selected.
