Tacoma, United States – January 8, 2012: Skyline of downtown Tacoma consisting of office buildings, condominiums, the Washington State History Museum, the Museum of Glass and Union Station.

Artists creating the colorful new mural at Tollefson Plaza invite community members to participate in the project, adding their handprints in paint to designated sections of the mural on Saturday, August 6. Originally scheduled for July 30, the event was rescheduled due to the extreme heat in the region last week.

The BLM Mural Project Tacoma is a months-long effort to recognize the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement and the local Black community. The purpose of the mural is to celebrate the achievements and contributions of African Americans throughout history. The handprints will decorate a quilt within the mural design, communicating that we’re all part of the fabric working toward racial equality together.

“The handprint element helps send the message that racial equality is a collective work in progress,” said Dionne Bonner, lead artist on the project. “Using creativity to bring people together and make a positive impact is one of the most fulfilling things I can do as an artist.”

Since late June, the team of artists has prepped the concrete stairs, transferred the design and painted elements of the mural. Local artist and project team members working with Bonner include Kenya Adams, Gwen Jones, Breyahna Monet, Brian Neal Sr., Tyirell Patterson and Charles Taylor.

Volunteers will help guide participants in handprint painting from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., weather permitting. The event is free, and all ages and skill levels are welcome.

Tollefson Plaza is located at 1548 Commerce Street in downtown Tacoma.
