For the Press & Standard

February is Black History Month, and a group of concerned citizens has chosen to celebrate this month by coordinating the “Lowcountry African American Cultural Arts Festival.” During the festival we will recognize gifted and talented artists in the Lowcountry who embrace the African American culture.

Several artists and craftsmen of all races from throughout the Lowcountry will display their artwork and talents at five different activities and are inviting the public to attend. These activities will be both inclusive and informative, allowing artisans and artists to broaden awareness of the African American culture.

The South Carolina Artisans Center will have exhibits of a variety of artwork and crafts throughout the month of February. A special presentation will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Artists will demonstrate how they create their work and attendants will be able to ask questions and participate.

Claflin University will perform at the Colleton Civic Center on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. This performance is open to the public and seating will be available on a first come, first serve basis.

On Thursday, Feb. 9 a quilt show with a craft and art exhibit will be held at the Walterboro Wildlife Center. More than 70 quilts made by Lowcountry quilters and their friends, paintings, sweetgrass baskets, ironwork, ceramics, jewelry, etc. will be on display. A reception will begin at 6 p.m. and conclude at 8 p.m. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the crafters and ask questions about their work. The exhibits will be on display until Monday, Feb. 20.

On Saturday, Feb. 18 an Africentric Fashion Show will be held at the Colleton Museum and Farmer’s Market. A fun time has been planned. Ladies and gentlemen will model African clothing and a guest presenter will demonstrate how to accessorize your wardrobe by using head wraps. Those wishing to participate are asked to bring their head scarves.

Saturday, Feb. 25, the Colleton County Memorial Library will host “Meet the Authors of the Lowcountry.” Twenty authors from throughout the Lowcountry will present their published work and will be available for book signing.
