NBC Sports Acquires Equity in Sports Betting App PointsBet
Online sports betting operator PointsBet announced a five-year partnership with NBCUniversal to become the official sports betting partner of NBC Sports. PointsBet will be the exclusive provider of odds and sports betting data for all eight regional NBC Sports networks, Golf Channel, NBC Sports’ podcasts and Peacock, the recently launched NBC streaming service.
According to Sportico, the deal is worth $500 million and gives NBC Sports a 4.9% equity stake in PointsBet. NBC reportedly has the option to buy up to 25% of PointsBet after five years. Founded in Australia, PointsBet expanded into the U.S. last year with its mobile betting app launching in New Jersey. It has since also launched in Iowa and Indiana.
PointsBet content will additionally be integrated into Rotoworld, an NBC-owned fantasy and sports betting analysis media platform, as well as the NBC Sports Predictor mobile app. That app offers free-to-play prediction games on the NFL, English Premier League, PGA Tour and NASCAR.
NBC is the latest U.S. sports media company to align itself with a sports betting operator. Past examples include The Stars Group partnering with Fox Sports to launch Fox Bet, William Hill becoming the official sportsbook of CBS Sports, and ESPN partnering with Caesars to launch a production studio in Las Vegas.
