Using the title “Streams, Spring 2021,” the Weis Center for the Performing Arts on the Bucknell University campus has scheduled three “unlimited access” or family friendly virtual presentations.
• The Snail and the Whale, from Jan. 22 to Jan. 24: This tall story, which is based upon a popular picture book, follows a tiny sea snail, who longing to see the world, hitches a lift on the tail of a great grey-blue humpback whale.
Together they go on an amazing journey until the whale gets beached and is eventually rescued by a young girl and her sea-faring father.
Their tale is told through live cello music and singing, storytelling and “…lots of laughs.” This 60 minute performance is suggested for ages 3 to 7 years or Pre K to 3rd grade.
• STONO/Step Afrika, from Feb. 8 to Feb. 21: This production features a dance company dedicated to the African-American tradition of “stepping.”
The focus is on the 1739 suppressed Stono Rebellion, a little-known event in American history, in which enslaved Americans in South Carolina, waving flags and beating drums, marched toward a “promised freedom” in Spanish Florida.
• This is Me: Letters from the Front Lines created by DIAVOLO, from Feb. 24 to March 2: This dance film explores how the current climate of isolation has encouraged individuals “to look within ourselves.”
DIAVOLO is a creative movement production company featured in this 35-minute performance, dedicated to the heroism of frontline workers.
The film, while following military veterans and first responders as they fight the “invisible enemy that all humanity is currently battling,” captures the resilience, determination and hope of the human spirit.
Prior to each showing, there will be a panel discussion with guests from DIAVOLO, Bucknell University, Evangelical Community Hospital and Geisinger Medical Center.
All performances of “Streams, Spring 2021” are free, but registration is required, 570-577-1000; or visit Bucknell.edu/BoxOffice
