San Antonio Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez was listed among the top 100 most influential African Americans of 2021 by The Root, an online magazine covering Black and African American content.
The 26-year-old was ranked No. 71 with an influence score of 158.9, higher than irreplaceable singer Beyoncé who followed him at No. 72. As the first openly gay Black man ever to be elected in Texas, McKee-Rodriguez was lauded by The Root for his progressive platform and actions in District 2.
The list was released Wednesday and analyzes each person’s influence, reach, substance and sometimes Twitter followers. African-Americans were chosen from across the STEM, media, sports, politics, entertainment and other industries.
McKee-Rodriguez tweeted his reaction to finding out he made the list Wednesday afternoon.
“Y’ALL,” he tweeted. “This is such an honor to be recognized among The Root’s 100 most influential African Americans of 2021.”
Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett of the National Institutes of Health topped the list at No. 1 and an influence score of 257, for her role in the creation of the Moderna vaccine. Rapper and Houston native Megan Thee Stallion also made the list at No. 11 for her outspoken advocacy.
