The Sanibel Public Library can help those who are bored of cooking at home.
In addition to access to cooking databases and cookbooks, it loans cooking kits, which check out like library books. The kits are circulated in bags with a coordinating cookbook and instructions. Some of the kits are especially handy at this time of year, like the soup pot, heart-shaped cake pan, cookie kit, tart kits or crêpe kit. February is Black History Month, a time to recognize, celebrate and honor the rich and diverse history and important contributions and achievements of African Americans. Celebrate the month with your library card. In addition to print books and DVDs, patrons can borrow eBooks from curated lists that highlight African American achievements and history via Hoopla or Overdrive Libby apps. Kanopy has also created a special collection of films and documentaries to celebrate Black History Month.
Locals and visitors can virtually attend World War II history programs with staffer Duane E. Shaffer via Zoom. No in-person programs are scheduled. On Feb. 24 at 10 a.m., he will present “1943 Operation Tidal Wave.” In 1943, the U.S. Army Air Force bombers attacked nine oil refineries around Ploești, Romania, in Operation Tidal Wave. Also, Shaffer has his WWII model airplanes on display in the library for February.

The library’s “Fill-A-Bag for A Dollar” book sale has started and will continue until Feb. 23. The books will be restocked daily, and can be found in the library’s downstairs meeting room near the main entrance lobby. Proceeds from the sale go toward the Sanibel Public Library Foundation, which helps support programs at the library.

The library continues to offer contact-less curbside service. To use the service, put items on hold online or make requests by calling 239-472-2483. You will be notified when your items are ready for pickup. Patrons have three days, excluding Saturday and Sunday, to pick up items. Hours are Monday to Friday from noon to 3 p.m.
Library cards are available to residents of Sanibel and Lee County at no charge.
Visitor library cards are available for a $10 annual fee.
The Sanibel Public Library is open Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library is closed on Sundays.
