Andrew McCutchen weighed his options.

In the lead-up to Opening Day on July 24, McCutchen considered what message he wanted to send. It was a tumultuous summer after George Floyd was killed by police in Minnesota, protests swept across the country and the Black Lives Matter movement gained momentum. He initially planned to kneel but changed course after talking with his wife, Maria.

“After listening to me, she said, What is it that you want? What picture are you trying to paint? What do you really want out of this?” McCutchen recalled Friday while participating in the “Athletes and Activism: Baseball, Race and Social Justice” panel assembled by the Phillies.

McCutchen wants unity.

“What does it take for the world to change? It takes all of us, not just baseball itself, not just African Americans,” McCutchen said. “No, it takes every single person, for us to fight this one battle that we’ve been fighting…
