Syracuse Stage play for kids, Black History, Carrie Newcomer concert: 15 things to do in CNY

It is the final weekend in February and spring, no matter what the weather may feel like, is right around the corner.

No matter if you are a fan of indoors or outdoors activities, you should be able to find something to do this weekend.

Syracuse Stage will be hosting a new family-friendly virtual play, the Erie Canal Museum will be holding a discussion on the canal and Black history, and the MOST will be holding an outdoors class on the best ways to pack and throw a snowball.

Meet “Danny, King of the Basement”

Syracuse Stage is bringing the Bank of America Children’s Tour production of “Danny, King of the Basement” to your home this weekend. It tells the heartwarming story of Danny, who creates an imaginary world to help deal with the instability and hardship of his daily life. Recommended for children in grades 2-5, this powerful and playful show explores issues of poverty, homelessness and the power of friendship. Carrie Newcomer

Join singer-songwriter Carrier Newcomer and pianist Gary Walters for a livestream of their concert on Saturday night at 7 p.m. They will perform old favorites and new songs which “celebrate what gives us daily delight.” Syracuse’s Park Central Presbyterian Church is selling the tickets locally for this uplifting concert to benefit the Samaritan Center. Pathway to Resistance: the Erie Canal and Abolition

Join the Erie Canal Museum on Thursday, Feb. 25, at noon for the first of its Lunchtime Lectures of 2021 which will explore the relationship between the abolition movement and the Erie Canal. Museum educator Derrick Pratt will talk about the role played by the Canal in the Underground Railroad and economic opportunities for African Americans along it. Eric Darius performs at Black History Cabaret

CNY Jazz is bringing West Coast saxophone superstar Eric Darius to Central New York virtually for a concert to end Black History Month on Sunday. The 5 p.m. concert costs $15. Darius, who has performed in Syracuse several times, is a “giant in the jazz world” and planning on creating a “production worthy of network TV,” exclusively for Central New York. “The Mountaintop”

The Redhouse’s Black History Month Reading Series continues on Friday with a gripping reimagination of events on the night of the assassination of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on April 3, 1968. Arts at the Palace in Hamilton begins a free three-part film discussion series with film professional Juliette Fahey on Friday, Feb. 26. Join Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation (NOON) and Haudenosaunee facilitators on Saturday for a unique interactive presentation which will explore the European colonization of North America, known in Indigenous folklore as Turtle Island, with a focus on the territory stewarded by the people of the Onondaga Nation and other Haudenosaunee peoples.
