On at least one thing – and possibly only one thing – Tyron Woodley and Colby Covington agree: Their fight at Saturday night’s UFC Fight Night event in Las Vegas is not coming together too late. Far from it, both men insisted this week. If anything, it’s coming together at the perfect time, when the social themes and political movements each fighter identifies with also seem to be colliding all around us.
“If you look at what he stands for, what he’s chosen to build his brand around, it’s politics,” Woodley said. “And this is an election year. I feel like what’s going on in our society, with social inequality and the way the system is working, African Americans being shot and killed by law enforcement, yeah, it’s the perfect time for it. … I think the fight means more now.”
Of course, that depends on how you measure meaning.
For the current political moment in America, sure.
